The book _Stop Setting Goals ... If You Want to Solve Problems_ was written
by a goals consultant because his business discovered that over half the
people they encountered were turned off and demotivated by goals and
goal-oriented language. These people were turned on and strongly motivated
by problem solving and problem-solving language. (The book's an interesting
read if for no other reason than that when the author tries to address us
problem solvers, it's visibly difficult for him to speak our language.)
I guess that most of us who have problems with 5-year plans are problem
solvers, not goal setters.
Another, less well-grounded, guess would be that problem solvers predominate
among Tech Writers.
