I have to agree with everything Andrew Plato has said except for the last
statement.
>From that point on - all I can say is what others said. Develop a rock-solid
>template, forget ever free-formatting, and keep your documents painfully
>simple.
Depending on the context, the output (document/web page/IEM) may also be
frighteningly complex. Depends on your system and what you are documenting. But
I will grant, that depends on your definition of 'documents'. If 'documents'
means the fragments that you create, then yes they can be painfully simple. The
complexity is in the assembling of the myriad of fragments that creates one
output instance.
Depending on what you are documenting, a single source approach may simplify or
complicate the documentation (and tracking) task. I'm with Andrew when it comes
to abhoring process that COMPLICATE things. But, given the right circumstances,
a solid process is what is needed to simplify things.
