I assigned a custom button to a one line macro that reads

Sub UndoClear()
ActiveDocument.UndoClear
End Sub

The button image I made by drawing a red X across the std undo button image.

You can also dump the Undo/Redo buffer without saving and quitting out of
Word. Go to Tools > Protect Document. Highlight the "Forms" radio button,
then click "OK." Then go to Tools > Unprotect Document. I've found that
periodically dumping this buffer solves a lot of the font problems, but
again, you have to manage it closely.
