Thanks to Mr. North for parsing my message on XML, HTML, SGML, etc., and
sending me back to school. My original intent was to suggest that each of
these languages came out of distinct problem domains and thus would be most
effective for solutions related to those domains: SGML and documentation;
HTML and the early visual Web; XML and business objects on the Web (data
exchange). Mr. North's reply and other messages I've read here recently
suggest to me another important point. The most effective solutions will be
those that have the most resources committed to them, regardless of whether
they were 'intended' for a particular problem domain to which they, for
whatever reason, become assigned. I don't know if XML will become a tool
integrated in some application for documentation that will solve problems we
have in a more comprehensive fashion. But I would be interested to hear from
the group about solutions they know about that are on the horizon or just
getting released and how these solutions have improved their work lives!
