This might be me being stupid, but what does whether project management
saw the value
of a tech writer have to do with marketing?

My first boss when I came here was the DOM, and she was very clear about
the value
of the contribution I was bringing to the table, and what services I would
be able to provide
to each group. And she's been very instrumental in my assisting the
marketing team with
the kind of work Andrew was describing earlier, putting some meat in the
marketing materials.
My entire company is very supportive of technical writing as a function in
general. In fact,
the DOM and the VP of Engineering almost got into a fistfight with the
Director of Sales one
time because he tried to unload some boring clerical work on me.

Now Project Management, don't start me on. I just got a project schedule
that has FIVE
DAYS in it for the review of three major manuals, including incorporating
the review
comments. I told my boss, "If I had known it was that easy, I'd have taken
more time off." :-)

The advantages are NOT with being with marketing. Although they may do
some
work that can fall under a marketing theme, it gives the wrong impression
and
value to a tech writer. My last job was working as a tech writer under
the
project management team, and when it came time for cuts, project
management
didn't see the need of keeping on the tech writers while some of the
engineers
thought it was a really stupid thing to cut. Normally, engineering groups
are
much more task-aware of what needs to happen for a release, and better
able to
understand how to allocate a writer's time and work schedule.
