TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Given that you said "way back" it's possible that you were using Word 97,
which had a notorious bug that frequently caused this problem. You can get
rid of the bug by installing the SR-1 update to Office 97 or a more recent
version of Office/Word; unfortunately, this will not restore the corrupted
graphics and you will have to reinsert them into the document.
The problem can also be caused by saving when your system resources are low.
You may be able to recover some of the graphics by right-clicking on them
and selecting Edit.
For more detailed information on this problem, see the article on the
Microsoft Word MVP FAQ site at http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/RedX.htm. I highly recommend this
site for any Word users - it's the best collection of information about Word
that I've seen anywhere on the Web. You can find a link to it on the DTP
page of my web iste, URL in my sig below.
Finally, if you are embedding the graphics in your document, you should
switch to linking the files instead. This will greatly reduce the size of
your document and reduce the chances of document corruption.

Keith
