Judy -
I think you should see the opportunity to concentrate on
writing rather than on page layout as just that; an opportunity.
Leave the FrameMaker jockeying to some monkey.
Damien raises the point (some others alluded to it) that
the *logical structure* of the documents will still be
your responsibility as the writer - chapters, sections, subsections,
etc. etc. But defining the point size and font to use for
subsection headings? Who cares, let the graphic designer
decide that.
I can definitely recommend using a plain text editor over
a word-processor / desktop publisher any day -- you
can type at a reasonable speed, you can take files home
on a floppy to work on your old 286, instant access,
no crashes, no headaches..... bliss.
I would also imagine that you will work *with* this
designer person in some way, and they won't be
distant and unapproachable. As long as you know
you can discuss things with them to get them
right between you, and you have good idea of
what the finished work should be like in terms of
style, then relax, you're now free to concentrate
on the most important aspect of the job, writing.
Enjoy...
