Re: Another patent?
Far as I can tell from this basic description, there isn't a WYSIWYG web
editor on the planet that doesn't infringe on this latest patent awarded to
NetObjects. It may be tough luck if you don't like Fusion; Fusion may be
the only thing still standing when the dust settles. (Too bad, as I'm a
DreamWeaver fan, myself.)
I'm not a patent attorney by any stretch, but wouldn't an infringing application have to use a similar architecture or mimic the patented application's behavior in some clear way? Unlike Dreamweaver, which works natively in HTML, Fusion uses a proprietary working format, then exports HTML from it. They can patent the way their tool does what it does, but given that drag-and-drop and WYSIWYG design tools exist for various formats (and have for longer than Fusion has been around), I don't think they can lay claim to that particular method. If so, it'll be a problem for a lot more than WYSIWYG (or Quasi-WYG, as it may be) HTML editors.
I don't think Dreamweaver is in any trouble. It's a completely different beast.
