You can't do much about the backups except manually count
them. As for the book ... an interesting CD was shipped with
version 5.5 of Frame called "Solutions Sampler". It's been much
ignored, but on it was a Windows version of fmbatch and two tools
from a company called Trees and Generals (www.dtrain.com). One
tool clears all the change bars in a book and the other reports the
page count to a console window of all the files in a book,
regardless of the numbering schemes used.
