misinformation, that's one.
XML is a markup language, in the same sense that SGML is a markup language:
there is a core set of tags (like <!ELEMENT> and <!ATTLIST>) that can be
used to define new languages. But XML is _not_ an SGML document type. The
XML standard is a subset of the SGML standard, it is not an application of
the standard. HTML is an application of SGML, XHTML is an application of
XML. SGML and XML are on the same level (they both describe how to create
markup languages).

wrong, or at the very least misleading. I'm correcting you, and trying not
