Perhaps Deborah Ray should make this a survey question. We might get a
better response if we keep it anonymous. I'm curious about the results, but
never liked to share my "grades" in school--it can so often result in hard
feelings one way or the other.
As for my GRE story, I didn't take the tests all that seriously. The
university I attended just about insisted (wisely, I might add) that all
seniors take the GRE (or one of the many graduate/professional school exams)
before we graduate. I went out and partied (moderately) the night before the
test.
Just to show my age, the logic/analytical portion was new to the test the
year I took it. When I got to that portion, I was surprised, and happy--I'm
weird, but I like word problems. In any event, not studying or having a clue
about the test turned out okay for me, and I was happy with my results.
Taking it while in school was an excellent idea (though the results do
"expire"--goodness knows why), as I was used to the whole test-taking
mentality. I doubt I'd do so well taking it now!!
Just as an aside, the certificate program I attended for technical writing
had entrance exams. I was talking with a fellow graduate the other day about
the tests. We don't know what kind of tests they were, but supposedly they
were to test our analytical abilities, technical aptitude, and writing
skills, if I remember correctly. Anyone out there have any idea about what
those tests might be? I'd never seen them before. In any event, the tests
helped them winnow out applicants. I think only about 1/3rd of the
applicants were accepted, or something like that.
