The combination of alpha and iota in Greek was Latinized to ae, and various words retain this spelling, such as archaeology, Caesar, and aesthetic, while in most cases it has gone to e (museum, phenomenon, ether). When it appears in typeset material, it is usually as a proper name (AEtna) and is set as a digraph or ligature, although the Chicago Manual of Style recommends against it [sorry, I can't actually type one in Eudora on Win2K with OpenType Arial -grr]. I don't know of an abbreviation that would cause it to be italicized, although there is aet. for aetatis, aged. It is also possible that a scholarly work would use older forms or be dealing with classical subjects (Aenead, aegis, paean).

not, apparently, a Latin abbreviation,

Anyone here know what it is? It is seen
chiefly in footnotes in scholarly works,
but I can find nothing about it on the
Internet, in the dictionary, or in a
Latin dictionary.
