Jane,
Other folks had good advice. It's definitely a good idea to check about why
something was decided; you often find out it wasn't "decided" at all!
One other thought: don't forget one of the reasons to use different
fonts--they help show the structure of the document. Having everything in
Arial might make it much more difficult to determine the heading levels in
your document. This isn't a concern in a brochure or short document
(perhaps), but it certainly is in a large book.
This was brought to our attention because our users told us they had a hard
time distinguishing between heading levels in our books. We did use Arial
for headings and Times New Roman for text (must be a favorite combination!
; ) but they couldn't easily distinguish between a Heading 3 at Arial 16 pt.
bold and a Heading 4 at Arial 14 pt. bold (or something like that). We
modified our templates to include a rule above Heading 3's and got positive
feedback about the change.
Just another point to consider if this evolves into a discussion at your
office.
Lydia : )
