<Design doesn't mean pretty. Design means functional.>

Absolutely. But sometimes the unenlightened person doesn't know the
difference and just asks for 'pretty'.

When you go beyond that and add value, they recognize that there's more to
this profession than they originally thought. Then you become recognized as
team member who has something significant to contribute. Then the SMEs are
peers and not 'priests'. It's just one way to build relationships.
