yeah, that describes the situation I ran into pretty acurately.

It was a long time ago, and I was much younger (and more easily
intimidated) in those days.

What I did was piece together as much as I could from other
sources, and then rounded it out with fiction - what, to me,
sounded reasonable at the time - and gave it to the recalcitrant
SME to review. He came steaming back to my desk, bellowing
"Where did you get *this* "information?" I asked him to show me
where it was wrong, and, in a state of high dugeon (is there
ever a low dugeon?), he did.

The document wasn't as complete as it could have - should have -
been, but at least it wound up being accurate.
