In the world at large, having a number of jobs is still looked at
askance ("Son, when are you going to get a steady job?"), but, in
high-tech, having lots of different jobs is the norm. Depending on what
survey you read, the vast majority of people move on every 2-5 years.

I must have had over 15 different contracts since 1995, and nobody has
ever looked questioned that record. It may help that I identify contract
positions on my resume; that helps to make clear that I didn't have a
full-time job because I didn't want one. Also, if anyone troubles to
check my references, they'll find that I completed the work to
everyone's satisfaction, and moved on because the job was finished.

However, if anyone did question my background, I'd point out that having
a variety of jobs has given me much more expertise than staying in a
single job possibly could. I'd also point that many tech-writers regard
being in business for themselves as the apex of the field, and would
gladly crawl a couple of miles through broken glass on their hands and
knees to be in the same position.
