Tools for managing a large document library:

For a library of Word documents that you want indexed and searchable, one
could select Microsoft SharePoint Portal server. Each document (Word, Excel,
etc.) must be submitted and published individually - during submission, the
user enters the key words and designates best bets. The downside is that the
technology is so new that right now the Web site might have to live on its
own individual server: when you install SharePoint portal the computer
becomes incompatible with other Microsoft products, like Exchange server
2000. Also, many of the more advanced features of SharePoint can only be
accessed via MS Office XP, which is not even out yet.

Another product that has been out there for years is Lotus Notes and Domino
servers. With SharePoint, Microsoft is competing directly with Lotus Notes.
Both are text-based database servers (or include the same).

Good luck.
