I understand that the "official" use in regards to the second guy in line in
the Executive Branch of U.S. government is "Vice President."

I also just looked in a couple of different Webster's dictionaries, and they
both provide examples in the form of "vice-president," "vice-chairman," etc.

Dick Cheney's and Al Gore's official positions aside, Vice President looks
to me like the title that Bill Clinton took upon himself.
