Joy Owen is <<trying to convert a Word document to .PDF and two things have
happened: First, the .pdf graphics come out almost entirely unreadable on
screen. Second, my original Word file graphics have become grainy and almost
unreadable since the conversion.>>

A couple possibilities. First, if you're using PDFwriter instead of Acrobat
Distiller, you'll generally get poorer quality graphics. Second, you may
have selected any of several graphics compression, aliasing, or subsampling
options in your settings. Try turning off compression etc. and see what
happens.
