There's more to life than a job. If you're truly happy where you are, I say
hang in there.

On the other hand, if you've considered leaving and were just nervous about
roaming into uncharted territory, this may be just the incentive you need.

Personally, I moved from my hometown (microscopic town in the mountains) to
DC without knowing a soul, without a job, without an apartment lined up...
Pure blind faith. I didn't follow a job, though I was offered several in
other cities, because I specifically wanted to be in (okay, NEAR) DC.

Yes, the traffic is hideous, but so few places have so much to offer --
culturally and socially, as well as professionally. I love it here and I
haven't regretted making the move even once.

There's no doubt that any or all of the worst case scenarios you listed
COULD come to pass. Of course, they could also come to pass where you are
now. There are no guarantees except death and taxes, remember? ;-) Plan
for the worst, as best you can, and hope for the best!

Good luck!
