Anthropology. I am trained as a cultural anthropologist. I am ABD - which
means that I did my field work - lived with my kid in a very small town in
rural Mexico - did my orals, all of it. Just have that little dissertation
thing to complete. Then they give me a Ph.D.. Do I have time to write my
dissertation? No. Will I do it one day? Yes. I was born an anthropologist,
the training just refined it.
But nearly the same questions I used to ask my hammock venders, I ask
engineers now. It is always amazing to me. I smile to myself often.
My training was very broad and I was interested in economics at a household
level and cognitive studies, which means I understand a lot about how people
think and conceptualize information in their heads. And then structure the
world from that information. And then act based on that structuring. And how
culture drives that. And I have been trained in asking questions to find the
info I want to get to - which is MUCH harder than it sounds.
As a result, I am perfectly positioned to be a teacher, a scientist, a tech
writer, a usability person, a small business owner, and generally a real
pain in the butt. I also test in the Meyers-Brigss as either ENFP or ENTJ,
depending on the day. I am like 1 question off either way. But definitely
extroverted and spiritual, logical and emotional. My husband calls me his
compassionate Vulcan.

| just as well in fields when the specialized information to
| be communicated has nothing to do with high technology.
