I'll second Doug's clarification of the difference, and say that I agree
with many of the people who recommended against using either. However, I
will say that as a rule in my documentation, I will use them when enclosing
extra, non-essential information in parentheses. I will not use them in
non-parenthetical text.

e.g. is "for example," and gives examples of a certain proposition (DON'T
end it, or anything else, with "etc.")
i.e. is "that is," and clarifies a certain proposition, often by listing all
components of it

Hope this helps,

What's the rules for using i.e. and e.g. ??
