----------------------Questions----------------------------
How do you follow-up with your staff to ensure that they're completing the
work assigned?

Either schedule work reviews where you get to see the work, this can be done as part of the review process, or have them submit their work to date on a set schedule.

How do you deal with people who are constantly grumpy and generally have a
bad disposition?

Counselling. This is why you are a manager, not to manage the projects. Talk to them, if they have a personal problem try to get them help. If it affects thier work and this is their personality, either they have to change, you have to change, or they have to go.

How would you go about teaching/training a new technical writer? Or is it
something that they must pick up on there own?

Training can be done by you telling them how the job is to be done. Processes within the department, workflow, tips and hints that you have found helpful.

There are some classes for technical writing, but they tend to be useful once. They usually don't address your particular environment.

How would you deal with Sally and James?

Talk to them, counsel them, work with them to get them to change. If the can't or won't, and their behavior and/or work does not meet the company standard, they will have to go.

Scott
