Hello Fellow Writers,

Say, my brother, the starving-artist screen writer, is looking to break into
office work. He is currently producing a feature length independent film but
is stalled financially and needs rent money. (The entire film has already
been shot on high quality video and is awaiting the raising of funds to
transfer the footage to film.) Years of restaurant work is destroying his
knees, necessitating his leaving that "career." Though managing film
projects over the years, he's gotten to be a really good project manager -
his latest work involved putting together a crew of nearly 50 people, and he
negotiated to have Elliot Gould play a role in his film. After years of
doing his own publicity, fund raising, and so on, he has also become a
decent end-use with the MS Office applications (Word, Access, Excel,
PowerPoint ...). He's also a good writer.

He has contacted some temp agencies (that hire office workers) and they have
put him through "testing." Turns out, he types great, knows the
applications, et cetera, but he doesn't have the "office experience" - which
is causing the agencies to hesitate. Two questions:

What can he do to get himself over this hurdle with the agencies?

What is the difference, in terms of job description, if any, between "data
entry" and "word processing"?

Anybody? Thanks!

Colin
