If there are multiple entry points into the different files so that someone who doesn't work linearly through the document might not see the very first instance of the name in the very first file, I vote for having it fully expanded the first time in each file ? unless the audiences are completely familiar with the nickname. Either that, or on the first instance of the nickname, include a link to file that pops up as a small window (that serves as a hypertexted footnote) positioned on the term fully expanded.

Regards,
Bal
