Hah, that company that hired me a year ago gave me
stock options. We were also able to buy company stock,
at >65$/share. Then they spun off of the company, and
our stock converted to the new company's stock. The
day they spun off, we were told the options would be
priced attractively at around $20./share for us; the
day after the spinoff, the stock was worth about
$12./share.
Now the shares for the orginal 'mom' company and the
new one are around the same price: $11./share.

I always figured options were a gamble anyway. Now
after being laid off, I am REALLY glad they had a
decent severance package, and I wonder if asking about
severance at a job interview would put a chill in the
air...

Oh heck, I don't want another "permanent" job anyway.
Put me down for contract.
Martha
