Johanna,

I believe we're all thinking about this
right now. I was laid off recently, and I
took the first job offer I received (with
a nice cut in pay, too) simply because I
wanted to be working through the next
few months. If I hadn't received a job
offer, I'm convinced I would have been
sittin' around on the dole until much
later in the year.

Aside from articles about the economy,
I've been reading as much as I can about
the human impact of the current market
slump. One article I read suggested that
the people being laid off right now are
underqualified to do their jobs, and that
companies are simply "rationalizing" their
workforce to ensure they employ only the
most skilled workers.

Related to this, another article suggested
that many people who had jumped into the
high-tech job market in the '90s because of
the promise of high-paying jobs were bailing
out (after being laid off, of course) and
retraining to work in more traditional
job sectors. The characterization was that
employees, like investors, are cautious
about "investing" in high-tech right now.

The current market shake-up will
certainly cause some people to re-think
why they got into high-tech, and it may
cause some cautious folk to seek work in
more stable sectors. However, those who
stick it out will be in high demand when
the next market upswing takes place, which
will hopefully be soon.

Cheers,

Rowena
