You could have several different types of experts working on any one project. If someone working with you said "this chapter has been approved by our expert," wouldn't you like to be sure they meant subject matter expert and not editing expert? :-)

I think the point is why do we find it necessary to make the distinction
between a plain expert and a subject-matter expert? Can't we assume that
the expertise of the expert we're working with is in the appropriate
subject? If I'm working on a document on calibrating potrzebies, I'm
going to work with an expert potrzebie calibrator, not an expert
veeblefetzer designer.
