In addition, many people - writers and non-writers alike - are so
fixated on grammar that they get a kind of glee in pointing out
proofreading errors. They couldn't organize complex information or
express it clearly, but they sure notice a slip of the fingers on
the keyboards.

The same thing's true of reviews, of course. Send something out for
a technical reivew, and chances are that you'll get no feedback on
anything except typos.

Not that I'm advocating carelessness. Like it or not, a cover letter
creates a first impression of anybody - not just writers.

One useful way to minimize errors is to have a few carefully
proofread letters in stock, and copy and paste as needed. Even then,
though, you could slip when customzing.
