Carol,
Like any piece of technology, its value for tech writers depends greatly on
the topic of documentation.

Currently, I work for a company who designs software based on a SQL
database, and I know a decent amount of SQL (the language). It has helped me
in a few situations when I wanted to dive beneath our application and figure
out what was going on in the database. And it helps our technical support
department because they've caught on that I have this knowledge and abuse me
with questions. (I guess you might say the knowledge is a bad thing in this
case. <g>) However, because our end users never see anything SQL related, it
hasn't really been all that outwardly useful in creating end-user docs.

On the other hand, in a former job I wrote training manuals for MS Office
apps. SQL did not a darn thing for me there.
