My company is a software manufacturer that was bought by a dotcom almost a
year ago. Thus, my dotcom has a product--several by acquisition, actually,
and so has a chance . . . as far as I can tell, many of the dotcoms that
have failed or are in difficulty were trading only in communication with no
product of their own. Even so, we are pre-IPO, a series of mergers left us
needing to streamline, which we did, shedding about 15% of the corporate
workforce and more than 50% of the technical writers.

Remember, most companies that use tech writers do not sell books. Thus, in
strictly bookkeeping terms, tech writers are overhead.

Cheers,

Sean
