I've been given an odd (in my opinion) job title, in my latest job.
But when people ask me what I DO -- even people in my own company -- I
always tell them I'm a technical writer.

Last year, before I took this job, I applied at AOL. As they proceeded
toward hiring me, they said they had to think of some other job title,
because the tech writer title would not bring me near as much money as I had
been making. I was told that's just the way it was at AOL -- HR dictated
that people who were called tech writers, senior or not, could not get past
a certain (low) salary level.

...In all of my jobs I've been called a technical
writer: in some of them, if I'd wanted to, I could have invented some
glowing title for myself. Had I been one degree more bored, I might have
done [so], just for the hell of it.
