Luck, intelligence and all are wonderful, but if you don't work you're butt
off to produce something, you'll never be a success. I think the dotcom
failures prove that point.

OK. You have touched my button. I did not know it was there. But you pressed it, so here goes.

Sigh. I moved to the Bay Area of California nearly six years ago. I have keys to so many "dotcom" offices that my keychain wears holes in my backpack. In those six years, few if any of the folks I've worked with did NOT "work their butts off". (Myself included and I often telecommute, FYI, both as a developer and as a tech writer.) In my experience, even the secretaries (if there ARE any) at dotcoms work their butts off.

The failure of the dotcoms proves NOTHING about whether or not anyone worked his or her butt off, unless you ALSO prove that (most) people at the failed dotcoms did not work their butts off. Which I know from personal experience you cannot do.

The failure of the company that invented and marketed Pet Rocks, now, THAT might prove something...

Conversely, I also happen to know of quite a few people who drive expensive cars and don't have a clue what working their butt off means. Look at Prince Charles, for example. (Or does Andrew claim that it's hard work to choose the right parents?) And, how strenuous a working life do you think -- say, Brittany Spears -- has?

Sigh. Back to work.

--Emily, who has not gotten to sleep before 4 a.m. for four weeks now, and the NASDAQ is WAY down today all my hard work notwithstanding
