I've managed writers and doc groups in several companies, and been
responsible for establishing company-wide technical communications
initiatives across several geographically dispersed offices. I've put in the
long hours on way to many occasions to count. But I recently hit a
crossroad. I was offered a position with a small company (1,300 employees)
to head up their worldwide technical media effort across 7 business units. I
would be a big fish in a small pond.
At the same time, I was offered a position with a large company (85,000
employees, who happens to be my current client, as a senior staff-level
individual contributor but influencing the tech comm effort across several
divisions (including managing/mentoring small writing teams), but not
anywhere near the authority/accountability as the other position.
Salaries were about the same; Big company offered twice as many options as
Small company, and about twice the sign-on bonus. And, the benefits from the
Big company were awesome. After 22 years' experience (and managing others
for about half of that time), I accepted the position with the Big company.
I like the more "normal" 45 hour work week--it gives me the time I need to
work on my freelance writing and book projects at home (and play/record with
my band)and spend more time with the little lady; I liked being the
information development problem solver and implementer of initiatives
without the headache of "management" occupying most of my day.
There was a time when being the tech pubs management honcho was important to
me; but I'm opting for a more relaxed pace now.
