> I think the reasoning behind such micromanagement is probably due to the fact
> that most people do not work when off site. They sit around their house and
> procrastinate all day.
As usual, Andrew's puffery gets in the way of the facts. He assumes that his
experience with a couple of writers is a universal truth, when in fact there is
plenty of anecdotal evidence from a wide variety of companies - reported at various
times in the regular press over the last two years - that telecommuting, properly
managed, actually results in greater productivity. All one has to do is a general
search on "telecommuting" in any archive that searches the media.
Workers usually report that they are far MORE productive working at home than
on-site. However, there is also a need for them to interact with others -
everything from formal meetings to the casual prairie dogging when you hear
something interesting - that can't happen off-site.
Andrew's statement that most people sit around and procrastinate is just plain a
lie.
