It sounds like what you ran into was a scenario where the XE/TC codes
"printed" into your PDF even though they didn't appear on screen in Word.
Since PDFs are generated through a printer driver, anything Word prints
winds up in your PDF, whether Word displays it on-screen or not.
Having hidden text hidden on-screen isn't enough -- it also has to be
hidden when you print. (Tools>Options>Print tab, uncheck items under
"Include with document.") My guess is that you reloaded a template with the
correct settings when you rebooted.
