RE: TRANSLATIONS
...Using Alta-Vista's Babel Fish, I can even translate Jabberwocky... <g>
However, providing the initial text is written in a formal model and
grammatically correct, you will note that a translating program will back up
the time of your translator, and the translation will cost you less money.

This reminds me of a very happy year I spent post-translating Japanese database manuals. The client, a large Japanese vendor of very-high-end database software had taken their huge, originally-in-Japanese manuals and -- apparently -- run them through -- well it was so long ago that it certainly wasn't Babelfish -- something or someone who generated something that looked like English but it was not English. The results of that process were enough to provide me with ample, well-paid work for three days a week for almost a year.
Highlights included --
* A message embedded (DEEP) in the software that responded, "I cannot handle authority" when someone entered a wrong password.
* An on-going (which was nice) example describing a team of "star", male baseball players whose statistics were stored in a database. The names of the teams translated to "The Butterflies" and "The Swallowtails". Those statistics included heights and weights in metric units. When I converted them, the tallest player was 5'6" tall.
I really, really enjoyed post-translation work. The most difficult part (at the time) was the sending telegrams to Tokyo to justify EACH AND EVERY change we felt needed to be made. Politely. No wonder it took so long.
