As a Canadian, I can usually use either. In this case, I prefer the
British, because it is more phonetic. A consonant between two vowels
is usually doubled in speech, so why shouldn't the spelling reflect
the pronounciation? English already has too many cases of the
spelling being totally at odds with the pronounciation, so why add
another one?
