That said, I know I could never hold my own in a conversation with a real
technical person and I probably couldn't program my way out of a paper bag
using Java or any of the other newer languages. So am I really just a
"pseudo-techie"? Or is it all a "mute" point anyway (sorry Arlen, couldn't
resist that).

I think that techie and non-techie begs the question. You have to comprehend what you are doing, why the thing does what it does, etc. When you can discourse on the thing you are documenting, whether or not you have the background or education to qualify as the person who creates the thing, you are a techie.

I know many tech writers who learn enough about their subject to be considered subject matter experts, even though their knowledge is shallow, spotty, and must be caveated for context.

You learn, therefor you are.


So, since we are talking about it, it isn't a "mute" point. ; )
