Robert Nimchuk <<...began to feel that info mapping was proprietary>>

It is; it's a trademarked process name. See
http://www.informationmapping.com/ for details.

<<Most of the books listed focused on Geographic Information Systems (GIS)>>

Which I'm sure really ticks off the trademark folk at Information Mapping
Inc. (IMC), since the whole notion of "thematic mapping" pre-dates the
founding of their company by a good many years.

<<are the principles of "information mapping" important in what we do (as
writers) or has it been effectively marketed to
make us think we need it?>>

Yes to both. The principles are all commonsense things that you could pick
up from reading widely in the technical communication literature, and if
applied with some common sense (rather than blindly), they work very well
indeed. If you don't have the time or inclination to learn the basic
principles yourself, taking a course from IMC would be a very good way to
learn those principles.

"Technical writing... requires understanding the audience, understanding
what activities the user wants to accomplish, and translating the often
idiosyncratic and unplanned design into something that appears to make
sense."--Donald Norman, The Invisible Computer
