Years ago I interviewed for a technical editor position with a textbook
publisher (math and sciences division). From what I saw during the interview
process, the textbook writers were supposedly subject matter technical
"experts." Apparently the "technical" part of the title referred to subject
matter knowledge only, with only a minimal ability to communicate with the
intended audience.

Textbook publishing is a highly competitive business and textbook adoption
(done by school boards at various levels from state to state) can be an
extrememly charged process, especially with textbook publisher lobbyists
involved.
