Salan,
Microsoft Office applications have a perverse way of generating
PostScript output. The lines in your tables, instead of being single
objects with a starting point, ending point, and stroke width, are each
composed of hundreds of short segments. Any graphics, including shaded
cells, text boxes, etc., are turned into bitmap (raster) images, which
are also huge and time-consuming. If you want to speed up the printing,
design your tables with a more economical use of rules. See Chicago
Manual of Style for good table design practices.
(PageMaker generates very clean PostScript, naturally, being an Adobe
application.)
