If, by "we", you mean "the company Kevin McLauchlan works for," then you certainly know whether or not they are your customers. But if by "we" you mean "all technical writers," then you are making a HUGE assumption. Not all of "our" customers are cutting-edge techies (or even middle-of-the-road techies). And those who are may live and work in places (areas of the U.S. and outside the U.S.) where high-speed internet access is not the norm, and maybe not even available.

Much of the computer, web, info universe was literally *not* out there, to be accessed (it hadn't been
dreamed up yet) when 14.4 and even 28.8K modems were in vogue. Those who want to stay with that technology are making a conscious (well many of them are conscious) choice to limit themselves to what is available via the narrow pipelines.

Almost by definition, they tend to *not* be the people that *we* are selling product to.
