To continue this thought about designing documentation for download <vbg>, I
am in Connecticut. Connecticut is not a rural state. I live in a suburban
area. DSL and cablemodem are not available to me. I do some web design and
ship other documents across the internet. I use a 56k external modem, 'cos
Winmodems stink. However, uploads are limited to 33k. My download connection
is, in fact, regulated to 53k. My ISP and other ISPs I have tried rarely
provide a connection faster than 42k and never faster than 48k. I suppose
businesses in my district can run T1s and multiple banks of parallel 56k
modems. But, the reality is, many, many internet users are connecting
between 28k and 56k . . . the majority of users have to be slower than 56k/
I don't know about the majority of small businesses, I suppose that would
depend on what their business is, but I suspect you cannot count on small
businesses connecting faster than 56k in most areas of the USA.
What do most websites do? Well, I don't know, but those that are retail
outlets or information outlets catering to the general public really need to
keep file sizes small . . ..
