TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I wonder if others have encountered usefully amusing bits of terminology
or turns of phrase that the rest of us might want to use occasionally.
For example, saying something happens "automagically" isn't a typo. Sometimes
it is quite a good way to describe what is going on, combining the notion that
it is automatic and that the reader should not attempt to learn details.
Once in a blue moon, it might be useful to remark that owners of some weird
hardware that is hard to support are "left to their own devices".
Then there are the silent letters, both the ones that should be silent such
as the intial L in "user" or the Y in "nyetwork" and the ones we hope do not
go silent like the N in "turnkey system".
