First off, even Kraft's own TV advertisement portrays kids close to that age
preparing Mac and Cheese by themselves in a microwave. And yes, I understand
that a microwave and a hot stovetop are two different beasts, but they both
have the potential for messes and burns.

Second, if you've prepared the kids as they grow up, it's hardly child abuse
to let them do a little simple cooking by the time they're 10 years old.
You'll note that neither of the children were hurt in Michelle's story; they
simply followed the instructions literally and wound up with an end result
that no one would want to eat. I know plenty of grown-ups that have pulled
that sort of stunt.

I'm an advocate of judging what each child is capable of much more than
judging them strictly on the basis of their age. I've seen web pages
designed by kids in the 10 to 12 age range that demonstrate a pretty good
intuition for good design practices (my token TW tie-in).
