Development, IMHO, is the best place to be. That way, you are
organizationally aligned with the rest of the people who develop the
products your company sells. In my book, if it goes on the CD (or in the
box) it must be done by a development group.
It sure beats being part of marketing or support.

To all,
I'm the documentation manager at a relatively small company --
approximatelly 100 employees. Up until now, documentation, like all the
departments, have reported directly to the owner/CEO. A development manager
is soon to be added, and the CEO's plan is for Documentation to be under the
Development Manager. I don't have a problem with a change, but I'm
wondering where documentation is positioned on the org charts for other
companies? At this juncture, do most companies consider development to be
the best fit for documentation, or, conversely, who do you report to?
