FWD: How to handle interesting contract situation

Hello List Members.

I have an interesting situation at my current contract and would like
your opinion on how to approach it.

My current contract was due to expire the end of this year after
several extensions. Recently, it was extended for additional time to
allow more time to find a couple of replacements.

Background:

When I came to the contract the beginning of this year, there were
three writers and a department manager. Then, two of them quit and
one was hired to replace them.  Recently, that writer quit. That left
one writer, and me.

That one writer went in to the hospital the beginning of the month
for an operation and is due back Jan 1.  That leaves me. BTW...the
current workload is not an issue...we're between releases, with the
next major release in March.

I worked from home on Friday, and when I come in today, find out that
my boss was let go. I have a meeting tomorrow to hear his "spin" on
what happened and what's going to happen.

Anyway, the question. I gave my comittment to the extension. However,
with things as I've described, and with what appears to be happening,
would you stick around or would you end your existing contract as
planned at the at of the year. 

I have no question that I can find a replacement contract...during my
last search, I was contacted by over 130 agencies and I have their
email addresses, waiting for me to become available.
