Dick Margulis' teacher ruled:

"Read over your compositions and, when you meet a passage which you think is
particularly fine, strike it out." (Samuel Johnson)

And "Murder your darlings" is Dorothy L. Sayers (I believe - though she may
have been quoting someone else...).
