Most companies in the Los Angeles with which I am familiar are paying
regular tech writers between $50 and $60K; senior tech
writers/leads/managers make more.

At my last job, (also in the Los Angeles area) regular tech writers were
making in $30's - low to mid. I am still in contact with them, and most over
there are still making that; needless to say, they are experiencing an
enormous turnover, since their salaries have not kept pace.

Yes, tech writers are a well-paid lot!
